Insider Tips

Book tickets online well in advance - they sell out quickly. Take the shuttle bus or horse carriage up the hill to save energy. The best photos are from Marienbrücke bridge, but it can be crowded.

History & Culture

Construction began in 1869 but was never completed. King Ludwig II lived in the castle for only 172 days before his mysterious death in 1886. The castle was opened to the public shortly after his death to pay off debts.
